In Birmingham, 241 cycling incidents have been reported to date, according to the latest data from Upride.cc.
Seb was riding when a driver deliberately drove into him — before reversing and fleeing the scene in a shocking hit-and-run. Thankfully, Seb had his Cycliq Fly6 recording the entire incident.
"My first hit and run after nearly 22,000 miles of cycling tracked on Strava. At first I thought he’d just slipped the clutch, but no, he drove into me deliberately and with purpose. He then reversed and drove off. Glad I had my Cycliq Fly6.”
Cyclists deserve to feel safe on the roads. The UpRide team asked Seb a few questions about his experience — here are his answers:
What Happened Before the Incident?
I was out riding when the driver made contact with my wing mirror. It was nothing more than a brush, but he clearly didn’t like it. Ironically, I was in the process of unclipping to turn back and wave an apology. That small moment may have saved me — because I wasn’t still clipped in when he rammed me.
At first, I thought he had simply slipped the clutch. But then he accelerated directly into me — deliberately and with purpose. He reversed, then drove off, leaving me injured on the road.
Miraculously, I only suffered a sprained wrist, a sprained ankle, and some road rash. My bike didn’t fare as well: my Dura Ace C50 wheel was buckled, the derailleur bent, and the GP5000 tyre destroyed. The frame looked okay, but I planned to have it professionally inspected.
Later, I learned the car had no MOT and no insurance — the MOT had expired back in February 2020.
What Was The Reporting Process?
The initial police response was frustrating. They told me to call my insurer and solicitor, advising there would be no further action. I was livid — especially since I had clear video evidence.
I made a complaint, and luckily, a specialist camera evidence officer — who was also a cyclist — reviewed the footage. He immediately recognised the seriousness of the case and escalated it.
The driver denied responsibility, but with my camera footage and witness testimony from another motorist, the case went to court.
The outcome:
- 27 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months
- 25-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement
- 4-month curfew (8pm–8am), electronically monitored
- 6-month driving ban
- Ordered to pay £250 compensation
Why Recording Matters
It’s hard to believe some of the reckless behaviour that happens on the road. But the best defence is crystal-clear video that leaves no room for debate.
You’ve heard it before: “I’m sure they wouldn’t have done that” or “No one would be that stupid.” But unfortunately, we know better.
With video evidence, there’s no more he-said, she-said. It makes it clear exactly how and why those “what just happened?” moments unfolded. And just as importantly, when drivers know they might be recorded, they’re more likely to think twice before making a dangerous move.
